Alright, I did something uniquely groundhog like (and also silly) , but its not ready for me to post because I procrastinated. So hold your groundhogs for a day. If Lost didn’t premier tonight then I would have time to put it up… Lost outranks 500 Days of Groundhog Day.

Well it looks like we have six more weeks of winter according to Punxsutawney Phil

P.S. I just noticed that the date says its February 3, but that is wrong. I assure everyone it IS actually Groundhog Day when I posted this. I guess I need to reset the time zone or something in my settings perhaps…

Day 19: The real deal

Get ready folks, tomorrow is Groundhog day!. I will do something soooo Groundhog-esque that none of you can even begin to comprehend. I almost hopped in a car with my friend Clay and drove to Punxatawny… but that would’ve been absurd. It might’ve been absurdly awesome and I might’ve just missed out on the most amazing trip of my life… Especially because it looks like the real Phil might be retiring and this might’ve been the last year ever to go see him…

Day 16: Larry

Not that anybody reads this thing, but if you are concerned about my commitment to this endeavor, don’t worry, I’m still in. I’ve just been distracted by a birthmitzvah, spontaneous trips, projects, school, etc.

I met some cool people over the last few days, one of which has almost the same laugh as Larry. Larry Larry Larry. Larry’s character has the opposite transformation that Phil’s character has. At the beginning Phil is a jerk and Larry is good-natured guy who enjoys laugh. By the end of the last Groundhog Day Larry seems less than stellar and Phil is this self actualized charming super genius. The progress of Larry’s degradation of pedigree really begins with his filming of Phil’s first suicide. He’s pretty unconcerned about the fact that Phil drives off a cliff and blows up, not that Phil was ever nice to Larry, but still. Then when Larry and Rita have to identify Phil’s body Larry blatantly lies about liking Phil and how he thought Phil was a “really really great guy” while he’s comforting Rita. It almost seems like he’s saying that to win points with Rita.. Finally, at the party on the last Groundhog Day Larry further degrades in character. He’s cheap because he pretends to leave a tip for the bartender but then takes it back when Nancy isn’t looking and his shmuzzy attempts at flirting with Nancy do not fly. Lame Larry.

Day 15: Why would you move from San Diego to Pittsburgh?

Larry the oh-so-charming camera guy moved from San Diego where he filmed swallows to Pittsburgh where he filmed groundhogs. Why’d he move all the way to Pennsylvania if he was in California. You’d think there’d be plenty of work for a camera operator in California in the 1990s; more than there would be in Pennsylvania. Maybe his rich Aunt offered to leave all her estate to him when she died if he promised to move to Pittsburgh and live in the pool house and be the handyman…

Day 14: Paradigm shifts

When something seeps in and changes you, you can’t do the things you did before and you don’t want the things you wanted before because you are moved and motivated on a completely different level. What will Phil do after the 10 yr hiatus in Groundhog Day World.

Day 13: Sea Otters don’t make love

Sometimes Phil is off on things. A few of his jokes aren’t really that funny and his implication that making love like sea otters would be pleasant isn’t really accurate according to what I’ve found about otter mating. I researched the manner in which sea otters copulate and it doesn’t really seem like something I’d want to engage in. The male sea otters grab a hold or female’s noses and bite down on them during copulation. Apparently its quite a violent affair and females can be injured during it… I guess the male has a good time though. So maybe Phil’s analogy wasn’t to far off if he’s a misogynist. I think I’m thinking about this too hard.

Ok, I’m going to first Thursday to look at awesome art now

Day 12: with friends

Last night I convinced a couple friends to watch GD with me. See! This challenge doesn’t have to keep me from being social. Of course after a while friends probably won’t want to watch Groundhog Day anymore, but we won’t think about that.

My friend Clay and I argued over whether or not Phil saw a neurologist, a shrink, and drove on the train tracks all in the same day. Originally I didn’t really think about it and just assumed it was one day, but really it could multiple days. After all, it would be hard to make a neurologist and psychologist appointment all in the same day. I wonder how many days I’d go trying to live quasi normal before flipping out.

Another thing I’ve thought about almost every time I’ve watched the movie is the idea that each day that Phil lives actually continues in some alternate reality. In some parallel universe each Groundhog Day is real and the consequences stick. Proof of this theory: One of the times that Phil commits suicide Larry and Rita have to go identify his body and the day continues even though Phil died. This means that the repeating days do not depend on Phil’s consciousness or existence, its just that he’s the only one that is somehow stuck in the loop. Maybe everyday repeats itself infinitely and each iteration repeats itself too and there are infinity times infinity parallel universes where we each live out different fates…

Day 11: Death and Toast

Of all the ways Phil kills himself, I find death by toaster to be the most desperate. The writer of The Brave Little Toaster killed himself: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/08/books/08disch.html?_r=1 Toasters have bad mojo… Wow, in Disch’s defense it seems like everything that could go wrong was going wrong in his life: fire, flood, death of partner, disease, eviction… poor guy.

Um… I’m really not in a sad, morose mood right now. I swear. Its just where my mind happened to go.
